Tom Jarmusch

(New York, NY)

Cleveland native, artist and filmmaker Tom Jarmusch presents a unique collage movie/installation, SOMETIMES CITY, which joins a combination of contemporary and "archaic" media, color and black-and-white footage, and various sound sources to offer a personalized, poetic, semi-documentary portrait of Cleveland.

About Sometime City

Jarmusch’s affinities for digital video, wind up 16mm cameras, and Super 8 movie film are maximized with this kaleidoscopic depiction of the Cleveland landscape. Combining street sound, conversations, voiceovers, and overdubbed music, SOMETIMES CITY (named from a poem by d.a. levy) is a fictionalized home movie-style installation inspired by the artist’s connections (past and present) to the city by the lake. Utilizing slow and fast motion, freeze-frame photos and normal speed, and a variety of subjects (everyday life, bands rehearsing, Cleveland history and art, neighborhood houses) juxtaposed and interspersed with shots of Lake Erie, downtown, the flats, strip malls, and storefront churches, SOMETIME CITY shows a combination of improvised and planned glimpses of Cleveland in a stylized attempt to elicit associations, to entertain, and to provoke. A personalized, poetic, semi-documentary portrait, SOMETIMES CITY will be screened via continuous video stream with an overhead projector and accompanying boombox onto an old home movie screen.  Exhibited in the former Hanna Shoe Repair Shop, the installation is further complemented by a raw space environment complete with folding chair setup and leftover shoes and heels lingering on the vacant store shelves!
