From forms, rocks, tunnels, and trenches to bustling crowds, sacred rituals, and ethereal movement – “Angels By Night” explores aspects of human spirituality in a multiple video and sound installation work, connecting images of spiritual humankind with the unexpected backdrop of an outdoor urban setting.

About Angels By Night

Arising from the spiritual culture of Lalibela, a village set in Ethiopia’s northern highlands, “Angels By Night” examines the connecting points between the spiritual and the corporeal nature of one’s life. Combining large scale black-and-white video projections juxtaposed with the outdoor urban setting of Ingenuity’s festival footprint, viewers will enter into an unexpected screening environment, inviting transcultural interaction with the foreign turf seen onscreen.

The sound of a steady drum rhythm underscores video images of forms, rocks, trenches, tunnels, entryways, exits, crowds, small groups of people standing still or in slowed motion, and individuals performing rituals. The camera maintains a sustained view of its subjects, and a mixture of footage screening at varied speeds to contribute to the viewer’s blurred perception of time. Providing a momentary rupture of the viewer’s expectations given its surroundings, “Angels By Night” instills a transformative experience through sacred and poetic illustrations of a spiritual culture, eliciting self-awareness and self-reflection by offering multiple points of view.
